SPINN / The Bodega / Nottingham

Tonight we’re at The Bodega in Nottingham to see Liverpool based indie band SPINN, who are touring with their new 2022 album “Outside of the Blue”.

But first up, we have a short set student band The Crying Violets, from here in Nottingham. Getting together in 2019 and the three piece have now released five singles, most recently working with Confetti, the creative technologies and arts college. They have an easy listening and melodic style of indie pop.  The vocals are delightful and delicate and sit so well with the guitar tones underneath them. Highlights from the set for me were Hate to Say I Love You and the final track Not What I Saw on TV. Very enjoyable start to the night’s entertainment.

Next up we have Overpass, from Birmingham. Playing most of their released singles, starting with Changes, followed by Stop the Clock, and On Your Own, before finishing the set with Otherside of Midnight. Singer / guitarist Max has a really good stage presence and engagement with the crowd, and is supported by Indie on Bass, Elliot on Bass and Joe on Drums (who was excellent btw !).

With a style all of their own their set is really enjoyable. They certainly got the crowd buzzing ahead of the arrival of SINN, and I can’t help  thinking it bodes well for the future.

But now, it’s time for the headliners, and the youthful pretty much sold out Bodega crowd are now ready for SPINN’s arrival and their brand of slick indie pop, with swirling feel-good guitars and a real positive, almost springs here vibe to it. Singer/guitarist Johnny Quinn, took to the stage in jeans and t-shirt and delivered his wonderful style of warm relaxed vocals as they launch into the set with Hello. With a bit of chat between songs in his strong Scouse accent, the large crowd were really getting into this.

The upbeat and fun, style continues with even more charm in the form of Sunshine which had everyone swaying away, with it’s bittersweet lyrics about heartbreak “Oh the Sunshine girls that break your heart I don’t know why you try so hard”.

Part way through Johnny ditches the guitar and sways effortlessly reminding me of that wonderful relaxed Morrissey style from years ago. He moves around smoothly and with a confidence. She Takes Her Time is a highlight which kicks off with their signature dreamy and echoing guitar sound from lead guitarist Andy Power.

But the real stars of the set for me were Is There Something That I Missed which was clearly a favourite with the crowd too and July at a Glance which provides some soft relaxation just for a while. The bands performance is outstanding, and I was really impressed with the drumming from Louise O’Reilly.

Notice Me, their second ever single and another pre-album fan favourite was also a big hit.

Noticeable was the absence of one of their earlier tracks from 2018 November one of my favourite songs, but the set list is designed around the new album which is to be expected.

But this was a great night. A light refreshing sound. SPINN are on the up, and I hope bigger things lie ahead for them. The new album is fantastic and worth a listen, and it translates into a live set so well.
