MuddiBrooke release second single 'Devil' on 31 October 2020

Today, we’re really pleased to introduce you to MuddiBrooke: the all-female Alternative-Rock/Grunge trio from Derby. MuddiBrooke are a ‘BBC Introducing’ act, and is comprise of Harriet McDonnell 'Brooke' (Lead vocals & guitar), Anna Melidone (Bass & backing vocals)  and Mary Prince (Drums). Despite only forming in January 2020, the band members have a wealth of experience in the music industry; including playing many large festivals and supporting successful artists such as The Beautiful South, Luka Bloom, Dr and The Medics and many more.

Devil is the follow up release to their outstanding debut single earlier in 2020 Turn to Dust. The new track and it’s official music video are scheduled for release on 31 October 2020 on all the usual music platforms. It is available to 'pre-save' on Spotify now: https://smarturl.it/MuddiBrooke-DevilPS  and can be pre-ordered on iTunes, Amazon and Apple Music here: https://smarturl.it/hgzt64

The track has a very personal background as Brooke explains “I'm usually a very calm person, my parents always said maybe I was even too laid back at times; but when I wrote Devil, it came from a deep anger inside me that I'd been bottling up for a while.

It stems from a mentally abusive relationship. The man I was with was very controlling - to a point where I didn't even recognise he was until many months after it ended. I never loved him properly but it felt like I did - it was classic Stockholm syndrome. He controlled what I wore, who I talked to, my music at some points. He was always around me and I couldn't get him to spend some time apart. Every time I tried to talk to him he just flew off the handle. He knew I loved a peaceful life, so he used this.

As these things are, it was a very twisted relationship. I thought I loved him but I actually deeply hated his guts and what he was doing to my life. But on the flip side, it gave me some great lyrics.

The whole song is basically just a big middle finger up to him - and he'll know.”

MuddiBrooke are one of those gems you come across every now and then… something special. Their influences range from Fleetwood Mac to Wolf Alice, and they certainly have an alternative rock / grunge feel, with great fuzzy guitar riffs, complimented by excellent heavy bass from Anna, and all this is underpinned and held together by Mary’s excellent powerful and pounding drumming.

I really loved their first single Turned to Dust and this is an equally good follow up. For me, the sound is a little like a band like Marisa and the Moths, but…… with a wonderful rawness to it…. And that’s great. For me, music is always at it’s best when it’s hard, emotive, powerful, personal, and with a rough edge….. For example, look at bands like The Delta Bombers and Black Stone Cherry.

And that’s exactly the sound you get here. The subject matter is very personal, and the track has a noisy and aggressive anger to it; a power and a sense of defiance and basically, just a great big middle finger. Nuff said ! The lyrics are emotional and often raw as you’d expect as they describe what it’s like to be in a mentally abusive relationship with lines such as “Don’t tell me that I’m happy here, don’t force me to stay. Oh no you’re mad again, I wish I’d stayed away”.

You get a real sense of how a victim of this kind of relationship feels and the fear, not knowing how or when the partner will react “I wish that I could see the future, so I know when you’ll get mad. You’re so difficult sometimes, like I’m walking on broken glass”.

It’s a brave song, and the message comes through loud and clear “It’s time for me to walk away, don’t ask me to stay. ‘Cause when the sun goes down, the Devil comes up to play”.

I loved this track. Its personal and from the heart. And with that, it’s raw, powerful and emotional. The lyrics are great and the powerful fuzzy / distorted guitars and pounding bass add to the sense of anger beautifully.

MuddiBrooke are certainly one to watch, and we loved Devil, well worth a score of 9.0 from LiveWire Music.
