New single “In Remembrance” from Gamdøden out now

Here at LiveWire we love a bit of doom / post-metal / prog / sludge and recently a band new to us reached out and asked us to give their latest single a listen….. And we did – Ladies and gentlemen, we’d like to introduce to you something very exciting -  Say hello to Gamdøden.

Gamdøden are a 4-piece band from Helsingborg in Sweden. Who play a blend of progressive metal, somewhere between Post-metal, Doom and Sludge. Gamdøden are Andreas Rödin (Guitar & Vocals), Kristofer Andersson (Guitar), Fredrik Kylmä (Bass) and Martin Skoog (Drums). Their latest single In Remembrance was just released in August.

Although they’ve played together for ten years, Gamdøden was only formed in 2019. Originally the band was to be called was Death of Vultures but it didn’t have the right feel, so they translated it into Sweden to become Gam(Vulture) and Döden (the Death) using the Danish letter ‘ø’ instead of ‘ö’ to make it look more evil. They released their first EP “The Ones to be Seen” back in 2022, and have now released In Remembrance this summer.

Tragically, after the release of their debut EP, long time drummer and close friend Christian Dietrich died suddenly, and this was the last song, they were working on together. The band have carried on and completed the song as a tribute to their lost friend.

When the guys reached out to us at LiveWire, I sat and listened to In Remembrance through from start to finish three times back to back. Frankly, I was blown away by it. It’s an incredible track and a shade over 14mins long. There’s a great prog metal feel to it, but mixed so brilliantly with that hard and deep heavy doom riffs. I love a great bass in doom music and Fredrik serves it up in bucket-loads, punch and driving the track on. I think special mention has to be made too of the drumming from Martin, which is gritty and powerful – a fitting tribute in itself to Christian.

Grief has long been used as a focus in music, but it’s so hard to deliver the sense of pain, and complex set of personal emotions well to a wider audience. For me, the best to date, is the latest album “A Feast of Sorrow” by Urne, but this is right up there too.

The sonic structure is unique to Gamdøden, mixing a wide range of styles and influences to create something special. A slow burning intro, as the vocals join, it has a haunting magical feel (something like Green Lung). When the harsh vocals kick in, there’s the power of bands like Møl.

I love this one, and it’s well worth checking out, a band I’d love to see live real soon ! My favourite prog/doom metal bands are bands like Mairu, and the brilliant Elder and Pallbearer, and in all honesty…..Gamdøden are right up there.

Keep an eye on Gamdøden – I’m sure there’s a bright future ahead !
