"The Overload" out today from Yard Act
Only formed in September 2019 in Leeds when Ryan Needham ended up living (temporarily) in James Smith’s spare bedroom. The friendship and living arrangements led to the development of the quarter that is now Yard Act. And out today, we have their debut album “The Overload”, and this one is well worth your time.
The post-punks mix disco drum beats, with bass driven melodies and strutting guitars. The vocals are quirky and fun, and at times remind me of the comic genius of Half Man Half Biscuit, with their humorous observations on this post Brexit mad world we live in. The lyrics have a brilliant ability to paint funny and sometimes savage (but accurate) portrait of people with lines like “knobheads morris dancing to Sham69” an observation on British culture, or ‘foodies’ with lines like “growing your own lettuces in the potholes in the road”.
There’s an infectious mix of styles on display and its definitely an early contender for our album of the year.

With an intimate sell out show at Nottingham’s Bodega in February already, the guys are back in town with a show at the Rescue Rooms planned for 18 May 2022. Tickets available here: https://www.rescuerooms.com/gigs/yard-act/
One of the UK’s most exciting prospects, this is a show well worth taking in.
