The Backseat Lovers announce 2023 UK tour dates

The brooding delicacy of The Backseat Lovers latest hit of new music, Slowing Down, subtly heralds the hotly-anticipated return of the band to venues in the UK & Ireland, releasing the track alongside news of their biggest shows to date. With its incessant heartbeat pulse, slowly snaking, crystalline guitar lines and hushed vocals, the third song revealed from the Utah DIY superstars upcoming, second album, “Waiting to Spill”, is another intensely affecting step on the way to its Fri 28 October 2022 release date on Polydor.

Such is the band’s word-of-mouth rise, memories of the four-piece’s debut London show less than a year ago, wowing a packed 300-capacity Moth Club will soon compare to a night at the historic O2 Kentish Town Forum in front of an audience of 2,300 as a run of seven spring 2023 dates is announced. Alongside the special, tour-closing performance in the capital, The Backseat Lovers play the ornate O2 Ritz, Manchester having played the intimate 110-capacity Gulliver’s pub in the same city just 18 months prior.

Renowned for their energetic, heart-and-soul-giving performances, The Backseat Lovers’ runaway popularity thousands of miles from their Salt Lake City home echoes that of their native USA, where tickets for legendary venues on their upcoming home leg, such as Los Angeles’ Wiltern and Brooklyn’s Steel are in sell-out demand. Firebrand performances at last year’s Lollapalooza, plus stadium shows with The Killers and Jack White, still ring in fans’ ears, raising expectations for what lies ahead.

All of the newly confirmed The Backseat Lovers UK & Ireland Spring 2023 Tour dates are as follows:

Wed 8 March – O2 Ritz, Manchester
Thu 9 March – O2 Academy, Birmingham
Fri 10 March – QMU, Glasgow
Sun 12 March – Vicar Street, Dublin
Tue 14 March – Stylus, Leeds

Overwhelmed by the double, simultaneously thrilling and confusing sensations of finding a global fanbase at the same time as riding into a global pandemic, “Waiting to Spill” promises the sounds of a band in reflective mood, growing together and apart, as musicians and individuals. Retreating into rural California for the duration of American society’s shutdown, The Backseat Lovers took time to reflect on the success of their 2019, self-recorded and released debut, “When We Were Friends”, finally getting to know each other, whilst pushing fearlessly into new musical realms.

Keeping the entire track listing under close guard up until now, all of the ten songs on the Waiting to Spill have been confirmed by The Backseat Lovers as follows:

1. Silhouette
2. Close Your Eyes
3. Morning in the Aves
4. Growing/Dying
5. Words I Used
6. Snowbank Blues
7. Follow the Sound
8. Slowing Down
9. Know Your Name
10. Viciously Lonely

By first revealing the intense, emotionally-charged Growing/Dying in August and then the smouldering Close Your Eyes just a few weeks ago, The Backseat Lovers had already led listeners to expect a deep-thinking and intensely personal document of the band’s changes from school teens to touring adult musicians, taking individual growth, family and relationships along for the ride.

Described by singer-songwriter, Joshua Harmon as “the most difficult thing I've ever done”, it was esteemed producer, David Greenbaum (Gorillaz, Beck, Paul McCartney) who the band turned to, to make the sounds in their heads the sounds on the finished record. Going so far as to use the sound-bending qualities of speeding cars, splicing songs together to make the whole and studiously toying with a plethora of pedals to warp instruments, voices and found sounds, “Waiting to Spill” is the ambitious, purposeful cousin to the star ship that was their debut.

Initially forming in high school and around the music scenes of Salt Lake City and Provo in 2018, Harmon isjoined in the band by co-songwriter, Jonas Swanson (guitars) plus KJ Ward (Bass) and Juice Welch (Drums). Their journey as The Backseat Lovers began with the pure love of songcraft, live performance and DIY-ethics, completing their first EP, Elevator Days, just days prior to graduation from High School.

What soon became a runaway train has rolled on to include 370+ million total worldwide streams, including the Top 20 Alternative hit Kilby Girl which spent five weeks on the U.S. Spotify top songs chart. Their organic spread amongst a community of discerning music lovers quickly led to a run of 60 live dates completely selling out on the band’s first two North American headline tours, followed quickly by landmark UK live dates including a near 2,000-capacity sold out Electric Brixton, London and a notable debut at Brighton’s Great Escapefestival.

”Waiting to Spill” is heading fans’ way in digital, 180g vinyl and CD formats. Standard black vinyl will be released alongside a dark green vinyl edition, available only from the band’s online store, while a clear vinyl version will be found at indies only.
