Sea Girls / Rescue Rooms / Nottingham

Following the 2020 release of their debut album “Open Up Your Head” Sea Girls, a four piece London based indie band released their second album “Homesick” earlier this year. Ahead of their major UK tour later this year, Sea Girls hit the road for a promotional tour in association with Indy record stores. The tour ended at Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms on Sunday, hosted by Rough Trade.

As such this was going to be a shorter than usual set, and for those in attendance, a nice little taste ahead of the show at Rock City on 17 November 2022. At a little over 45mins, the set list was made up of ten songs, all from “Homesick” with the exception of the final encore track All I Want To Hear You Say (from “Open Up Your Head”).

For a young band, what really struck me was their on stage chemistry as a band. The delivery was flawless too with Rory Young on guitar energetically whirling round the stage, and Andrew Dawson n bass getting into it too. Guitarist and singer Henry Camamile was on great form, delivering a great vocal performance.

The performance was great and they had the large crowd hanging on their every word / note. I’m sure it must have been close to a sell out, and it was great to see a mix f age ranges too. The set kicked off with Sick a real catchy recent single for me, despite being a single, one of the weaker songs on the new album, but in a live environment its pretty good.

Friends is a really smooth song about friendship which grows and becomes more intense, but somehow staying light. A great live track is Again, Again which is even more fast-paced, and reminded me of their earlier songs, such as Violet form their debut album. Cute Guys is a great showcase for Camamile’s vocal tones and this is followed by Lonely, probably my favourite track on the album with it’s gritty vocals it has a great edge to it.

Another single from the album Hometown was great too, and one that I think will be a firm live favourite moving forwards with its screaming guitar intro. In contrast, Sleeping With You is slower and has a wonderful vulnerable edge to it, and a delightful almost Fontaines DC feel to the first few lines. Although the lyrics are sad n this one, the instrumentation and tempo keeps it balanced.

I have to say, Sea Girls is a band I’m really excited about, and I’m loving their latest album. This may have been a short set, but a thoroughly enjoyable one and a mouth watering taste of the new album ‘live’ and what will be on offer in November.
