Out today – the debut single from POSE
I’d like to introduce you to POSE and their debut single ‘Ten Miles’. POSE are Ryan Lee (guitar, synth & vocals) Richard Stephenson (bass) and Jessica Montgomery (guitar & vocals) who have come together to combine a wide range of experiences, with backgrounds in indie pop, experimental prog-rock, and post-punk. POSE have unearthed a collective sonic understanding that bridges elements of dreamy shoegaze, scintillating pop and grandiose soundscaping, and this, combined with a longing for pushing creative boundaries is what POSE is all about.
When this one first crossed my desk, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I have to say, this is something I’ve been really enjoying over the last week or so, and it’s been on regular repeat. For a debut single, there’s no rawness or roughness to this release, the production is really solid.
Working remotely, the band members as we all have, have faced these personal and global challenges but they have they have poured their creative hearts and souls into the new single. And it shows. The lyrics are well crafted, and very poignant for these times we find ourselves in with excellent lines such as “Breathe, I want to breathe you in, feel you underneath my skin. Peel the layers away so thin, steal my heart on a whim.” And “Hear me I want you to know, free me, from the pain inside my soul”. The chorus expressing the frustration of love divided “I love you but you’re miles away”.
Jessica leads with an excellent vocal performance, which undulates from power to soft and delicate. Her tone is excellent and delivers a good range. The bass is deep and powerful and underpins the whole track really well, and the guitar work is crisp and clear, creating a wonderful sonic wall at times and at others can be light and almost dreamy, before once again launching into sections of power. At about two thirds there is a delightful mellow pause, where the synth tones come through, before the guitars explode at us with intensity as the track reaches it’s conclusion. The vocals kick in again and ride beautifully over the powerful guitar playing later in the track and the two complement each other very effectively, before the vocal tones deepen and subside as the track draws to a sudden end.
Great ! I really enjoyed this one, and I’d recommend it for anyone looking for something new. I’m looking forward to hearing more from PSE in the future, and to seeing them live, as this would transfer to a live setting really well. A great debut and worthy of a solid 9/10 score from LiveWire Music.
