SINGLE REVIEW: "Medusa" from Autøne

SINGLE REVIEW: "Medusa" from Autøne

31st January 2025, sees the release of the new single Medusa from Autøne. Coming from North Wales Autøne are Jasmine Roberts, Sion Jones and Sam Green. If you like the sound of band such as Halestorm, Tonight Alive & Paramore, then this might just be for you.

Autøne was founded by lead singer and songwriter Jasmine Roberts. At the age of 19, Jasmine wrote and fully funded the first EP which was recorded in 2016 at the motor museum studios in Liverpool. Producer Al Groves (Bring Me The Horizon) beautifully tied together 3 songs along with Jasmine to create the “Emerge” EP. Upon self release, the leading single Accentuate And Determinate reached a rather fabulous 17th position on the iTunes rock charts and the song received airplay from BBC introducing and stations in America and Australia.

In 2023, the first single of the new era Home was released. This song showcased a softer side to Jasmine's writing, but fuelled her desire to write a full album. In April 2023 Autøne gained the attention of Youth, a Grammy award winning producer and bassist for Killing joke and the band were offered an opening slot on his North West tour. Autøne are now recording their full length album in Stiwdio Sain in North Wales, working with Aled Hughes who produced their last single Home.

Medusa is the first single from the upcoming album and will be released on 31st January.

Autøne are a new band to me, but I have to say, right from the first spin of the new track Medusa I was hooked. Described as for fans of Halestorm and Paramore, it has a youthful power to it, and would also appeal to fans of bands like Melissa and the Moths.

The production is great, crisp and clear, with each element the soundscape balanced, not competing for dominance. The drums are hard hitting and paced, and the guitars deliver a punchy powerful performance. It’s an up tempo rocker of a track, with some anthems melodies.

Punchy guitars, a hard hitting rhythm section and anthem-like melodies. Jasmines vocals are the icing on the cake. Her tone and delivery are spot on with a great range and versatility. At times soft and delicate at at other times powerful and soaring, matching the guitars for prominence in the mix. There’s the feel of Evanescence or Lacuna Coil to their sound too.

The verse sections are subtle before the track explodes into a rip roaring up tempo rocker in the chorus sections with their soaring melodies. Its one of those numbers that is just meant to be heard live.

It’s one of those tracks that the more you listen to it, the more you like it. It builds and erupts into a tidal wave of power rock by the end with some very impressive vocals leading the way, before suddenly dropping off into infinity.

Cracking stuff, and adictive, a belter of a single and deserving of a 9.0 from LiveWire.

If more of this is what awaits on the new album….. summer can’t come soon enough.

Autøne are one to watch, and we’ll be keeping a close out for more releases in the run up to the album launch. I have a feeling, Autøne would be one hell of a live band, and would slot in nicely on the tent stages at somewhere like Download…..
